Why So Angry?

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

We’ve just been going over how sweet Gears of War looks. This is actually part one of two, and we’ll be finishing this one up next week, so stick with us. I’m hoping we can keep doing these comic series because they’re easy to flesh out and make my life that much easier.

As far as GoW goes, the game really does look frickin sweet. As a FPS fan, I’m highly critical of all new entries into the genre. This one will be no different, once I’ve had a chance to play it. For now though, the thing looks great and seems to be fun to boot. One of the things that most impressed me was how interactive the developers made the environment, but more importantly, how seamlessly they blended it together.

There’s some videos of the game up on the intertron of the action. One of them actually has a stage demo and shows some of the environmental effects and events that take place while the player is shooting their way through the stage. While not technically important to the progression, they definitely bring you into the game that much more. The other thing I thought was cool was their context interaction, using a single button to allow the player to interact with the world around them. Crouching to go into cover, then jumping over the cover to keep moving forward was all easily accomplished with just the A button.

Here’s hoping the test drive is everything I’m hoping for, and more.
